Samba’s story begins with the blended African and Latin American culture of Brazil. The exciting music style that inspired Samba dancing originated with the people of Angola in Africa. Samba is actually a family of dances with different origins; when the Portuguese arrived in Brazil, they called all native dance forms “Samba.” The Lundu dance from the Bantu peoples of sub-Saharan Africa is thought to be a predecessor to some of these forms.
During Brazil’s Carnival season, Samba dancers do their solo routines atop parade floats. Female performers must be very fleet-footed to do the dance, dancing only on the balls of their feet while wearing high heels.
Samba de Gafieira is a partner-dance form of Samba that incorporates elements of the waltz and the tango. It originated in the nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s. Samba Pagode, a partner dance style that originated in São Paulo, is generally more intimate and less acrobatic than the Rio variety. More contemporary variations of Samba dancing incorporate reggae music combined with Brazilian-style drumming.
