There are multiple dances included in Latin Dancing, but the most popular are Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha, Mambo, Merengue, and Rumba.
The Salsa originated in the Caribbean but has strong African influence. The fast-paced dance consists of 3 steps, 2 quicks and 1 slow or pause with a four-beat combination. Dancing partners can even add exciting turns and put their own spin on the dance that leads to an impressive performance.
The Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic and gets its name from Bachata guitar music. The dance revolves around a four-beat pattern where partners are moving side to side. It goes as follows: three steps to the side followed by a pause, but there is a lot more movement incorporated than just the few simple steps.
The Cha-Cha was born in Havana is a Cuban dance created to substitute the Mambo. Since the dance has a 3-step pattern, it is often called the Cha-Cha-Cha because dancers will count the steps.
The Mambo originated in Cuba and its signature move consists of a three-beat step moving forward and back, dancers are also shifting their weight from one to the other. While one partner is performing the backward motion, the other moves forward.
The Merengue is the official dance of the Dominican Republic and usually considered an easy dance to learn and a great place to start when you begin Latin Dancing. The steps consist of going to the front, back and side when danced with a partner. Dancers will keep their knees bent and feet in contact with the floor while they step with the inside edge of the foot, then roll their foot to transfer weight and drag the other foot to meet the first.
The last dance, the Rumba, originates from Cuba and is two quick steps and a third slower step that uses two beats. The pattern that dancers follow is box-like and helps them guide their movements.
