The Waltz is said to have been developed from multiple “peasant” dances over centuries. While the exact origins are unknown, the dance was introduced to the upper-class Germans and Austrians between the 18th and 19th century. Shortly after, it was spread to England and then the United States. The dance was known for its tight embrace and causing dizziness. Over the years, there have been many variations of the Waltz, including the “New Waltz” which was started in Boston, Massachusetts during the late 1900’s. The New Waltz was a variation of the original Rotary Waltz. Instead of only turning clockwise, the New Waltz added simpler footwork, using a counter-clockwise as well as a clockwise rotation for its steps. Since then, there have been many variation of the Waltz such as the Country Waltz, the Cross-Step Waltz, and much more.
