History of Foxtrot Dancing

The Foxtrot came about in the summer months of 1914 on the rooftop of the renowned New York Theatre. A vaudevillian named Harry Fox originated the steps of this dance as he performed to the music called ragtime. Audiences started to refer to the steps as Fox’s Trot. As the popularity of the dance grew, the famed dance team, the Vernon Castles, took up the Foxtrot as their signature dance. It was known for its elegance and the charming quality of the steps. The Foxtrot soon became the dance that many elite dancers of the era, including Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were seen dancing together in film and on stages across the country.
